abcde: Ripping to all the rest......

On this page are all of the 'extra' conf files that defied any neat categorisation! Eight conf files are here from the sensible Ogg Vorbis conf file to the more exotic example of a conf file to rip your audio cds to AC3. I hope the page proves useful, let me know by using the email link at the base of this page if this is so...

Menus for abcde...

To use these menus simply create a file called ~/.abcde.conf and paste the contents of these offerings into the file, start up abcde and all will be well!

  1. ~/.abcde.conf for Ogg Vorbis: Use a great free codec that is widely recognised by software and hardware players.
  2. ~/.abcde.conf for Monkey's Audio: More of a 'niche' codec but one that produces great sound, well worth exploring.
  3. ~/.abcde.conf for Musepack: Musepack has been around for a while and well worth trying. Hardwae support is not great with this codec.
  4. ~/.abcde.conf for Speex: Intended for the spoken word and for the most part supplanted by Opus.
  5. ~/.abcde.conf for Opus: The big new codec that works well with both music and the spoken word.
  6. ~/.abcde.conf for Mp2 (Twolame): Once again more of a 'niche' codec that might be some fun for experimentation.
  7. ~/.abcde.conf for Mp2 (FFmpeg): MP2 encoding with FFmpeg rather than Twolame.
  8. ~/.abcde.conf for AC3: Illustrating how the Matroska container can be used with abcde.

~/.abcde.conf for Ogg Vorbis

This format arguably produces better sound than MP3 at a smaller file size and it is completely free. You would do well to use the AoTUV modified oggenc, as I have done, for the ultimate ogg vorbis experience!

Again the first are for change would be the -q 6 setting but I believe that most will be happy with the sound produced at this level. Options are from -1 to 10 or of course you can place your own custom ogg encoding options here, have a look at Hydrogenaudio for some thoughts on this.

~/.abcde.conf for Monkey's Audio

Encoding to Monkey's Audio (ape) arrived in abcde at version 2.7 and was inspired when I came across Monkey's Audio encoding and its most enthusiastic supporter Shantiq on the Ubuntu Forums! Tagging is with Robert Muth's Apetag which is a little aged but installs and runs well. Try the conf file and listen to the sound: you be the judge!

There are not too many options to manipulate with the encoder mac and even fewer with apetag but it is always good to see another encoder solidly added into abcde :).

abcde 2.7 features Musepack SV8 support which I think has not been fully utilised by abcde users. So here is an ~/.abcde.conf file to start your own exploration of this quality format which should be better known and appreciated.

Tagging is done during encoding with mpcenc so extra tagging options must be added in with the encoding options. For those who wish to explore the Musepack encoding options a little more the command mpcenc --longhelp will show the details. The first thing to manipulate might be the encoding options although the options given give a perfectly adequate output file with a bitrate of about 210 kbps. ~/.abcde.conf for Speex

Speex is designed for the spoken word, not music, and its role has pretty much been taken over, or 'obsoleted', by Opus. Give it a try on your audio cds and have a last look at Speex before it goes completely!

Speex is approaching the end of its life but I will leave this configuration file here for perhaps another year or three, just in case there are any speex devotees out there. Send me an email if you are still using speex and it will stay longer!

Opus is the new kid on the block and this totally free codec promises great things for both voice and music. I give an abcde.conf file below more suited for music and I challenge you to investigate this great codec a little further!

Tagging for Opus is done during the encode (inline) so any tagging options need to be added in with the standard Opus options.

~/.abcde.conf for Mp2 (Twolame)

Support was added for encoding to MPEG-1 Audio Layer II (mp2) in abcde 2.7.1 with the correction of a few issues with existing MP2 encoding. It can be accomplished with either Twolame, as I illustrate below, or can be accomplished with the FFmpeg native MP2 encoder. Tagging is with Mutagen's mid3v2 and these tags are somewhat patchily read by some applications.

I suspect that MP2 encoding might not be all that popular but it does round out abcde's encoding family and I had a lot of fun adding this capability to abcde :).

If you do not wish to install Twolame for mp2 encoding it is possible to use the FFmpeg native encoder and the following ~/.abcde.conf allows for this combination:

I would like to hear from anybody who has experimented a little with this encoder and can suggest some more advanced options...

Once again using FFmpeg this particular conf file aims to not only give access to the AC3 codec but more importantly open the way to encoding audio to the Matroska or mka container. Try it and let me know what you think.

There is an opportunity within the abcde to code to extend the usage of the Matroska container but I am currently on leave from the project so perhaps this will be a project for others :).
